ECsafeSEAFOOD aims to assess safety issues mainly related to non-regulated contaminants present in seafood as a result of environmental contamination and evaluate their impact on public health.
The aim of this workshop is to gain better insights into actions and steps that ECsafeSEAFOOD can take considering the project results on non-regulated contaminants of emerging concern for the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) – Descriptor 9 (Contaminants in fish and seafood for human consumption) and Descriptor 10 (Marine litter).
This event is targeted towards EC and other policy and decision makers involved in MSFD.

Aeiforia srl., a spin-off company of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, in cooperation with Expedia MRCC, is organising a workshop focusing on chemical exposure assessment. In particular the results of two EU-funded projects will be presented: 4FUN and Love-to-Hate. 4FUN aimed at delivering a standardized tool for human exposure assessment to chemicals, named MERLIN-Expo, which will be presented during the workshop. Love-to-Hate is expected to shed light into the complex interactions between pesticides and soil microbes and the parameters controlling which way the balance will go: toxicity or adaptation. The objective is to define a new framework of well-established experimental protocols and a toolbox of standardized and advanced methods for soil microbial toxicity assessment of pesticides. The final aim is to set the scene for the revision of the current regulatory framework.

The GLOBAQUA project is organizing an interdisciplinary conference for exchange and discussion of innovative scientific findings and methods in aquatic ecosystems research. The conference focuses on novel methods of environmental monitoring and modelling to improve process understanding the interconnectivity and feedback mechanisms of climate, land use, economy, hydrology, water quality, biology and aquatic ecosystems. Further, the conference builds the bridge to the scientific assessment of implications on policy and management.

The SEA-on-a-CHIP Summer School was offered by the SEA-on-a-CHIP project in collaboration with the ECsafeSEAFOOD and the Integra-Coast projects. The 5 days intensive program (conducted in English) adopted a dynamic, multidisciplinary and interactive approach. The course included lectures and practical sessions on all aspects regarding the development of biosensors for monitoring of sea contaminants. A field study in the ocean as well as social activities were planned.
Genova, Italy. 14th May 2015, 2:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m.
How contaminated is the fish we eat? And how much do we know about it?
This meeting will bring together consumer organisations and seafood producers and processors to discuss how best to develop strategies to ensure that the correct information is communicated while also safeguarding confidence in the fishing industry. Interesting results about emerging pollutants found in seafood products from the ECsafeSEAFOOD project will also be presented at the workshop.
The workshop was hold at SlowFish 2015 in Genova, Italy (http://slowfish.slowfood.it/en/).
Moderator: Alexandru Marchis, OPERA Research Centre
Location: Palazzo San Giorgio - Via della Mercanzia, 2 - Genova (Italy)
Developed within the 4FUN Project, MERLIN-Expo is a state-of-the-art software for exposure assessment of chemicals which integrates on the same platform multimedia, PBPK, and dose-response models, allowing to cover all the exposure assessment chain (from concentration in water, air and/or soil to internal dose to target organs and eventually pathology risks).
MERLIN-Expo allows you to carry out lifetime risk assessments for different human populations including exposure through multiple pathways.
